1974, Paco Elvira.
In the early hours of April 25, 1974, a military column began to take over the streets of Lisbon. The Armed Forces Movement, made up mainly of young officers, planned to put an end to the fascist “Estado Novo” regime, which had plunged Portugal into misery and repression. Within hours, the population joined in a massive and peaceful mobilization, transforming the military coup into a revolution that overthrew the longest-lasting dictatorship in the Western world without violence.
Upon hearing the news, Paco Elvira, a photojournalist just over twenty years old, traveled there to document that historic moment and the arrival of Mário Soares, an exiled opposition leader who was welcomed as a symbol of hope and renewal. The previously unpublished photographs featured in this book stand as a testament to one of the most effective popular movements in contemporary history.
