Hundreds of unaccompanied minors live in the city of Melilla, Spain. The poor conditions and systemic violence in the reception centres mean that many of these young people run away to survive on the streets, alone and unprotected. For them, Melilla is the port, the stepping stone to their ultimate goal, continental Europe. To reach the mainland, they must cross – hidden in the underside of lorries or freight containers – the Mediterranean Sea, the most lethal border in the world.
