1976–1984, Javier Campano.
El Rastro, with more than four centuries of history, is an emblem flea market of Madrid and a reflection of its character. In the mid-1970s, Javier Campano began to walk through it every Sunday, camera in hand, allowing himself to be carried away by its hustle and bustle and particular chaos.
This market became a symbol of the social and cultural change the country was undergoing, as it emerged from decades of Franco’s dictatorship and began to embrace new freedoms. It was a meeting and exchange point for the community, where political and cultural ideas were openly discussed. The sale of banned books, previously censored music, and items symbolising the counterculture made El Rastro an epicentre of the new Spanish identity that was emerging.
