Childhood is the stage in which the world is experienced for the first time and where the first traces of identity are moulded. Beyond a biological period, it is also a cultural and social construct, an intimate space that, at the same time, is a reflection of the society that surrounds it. Childhood is a window onto what a time and a place consider possible, desirable or inevitable.
Benito Román’s photographs, taken during the early years of the Spanish transition, document a generation making its way in a country torn between the shadows of an authoritarian past and the promises of a freer future. In these images, the children’s daily lives pass between landscapes of precariousness and resistance-marred by repression, traditional values and the omnipresent influence of the church-alongside the first glimmers of change and emancipation.
Este Sol de la Infancia portrays that delicate balance between the weight of inheritance and hope for the new, showing how, even in a context of contradictions, childhood manages to be a space of play and resilience.
